19 ideas to create more space in smaller bedrooms (1)

Whether you're renting in a city or currently staying in halls at uni, sadly not all of us have the space to rival Kylie Jenner's $30 million home. While it's nice to look through pics of Calabasas mansions (and dream of how we'd style it if it was our space...), in reality, you're probably more likely to benefit from some small bedroom ideas instead.

With so much stuff to fit in such a little space (let's be real, we're not going to cut down our online shopping habit, are we?), you're going to have to be savvy if you want to squeeze everything in. After all, since surviving all those lockdowns way back when, we know how annoying it is to have to stare 24/7 at your heaving cupboards, or having to move piles of stuff off the bed every time you want to get some kip.

Guess what though – it IS possible to enjoy a bedroom where you can actually breathe and decompress if you just make a few small tweaks. We've rounded up some of our favourite small bedroom ideas to help you use your room more effectively, so you can enjoy a clutter-free area where you can actually relax (and finally close your wardrobe doors for once).

That can be anything from a space-saving bed to under bed storage, or maybe you'd benefit from having a real good look at your wardrobe and seeing if there's anything you can declutter. Alternatively, some good shoe storage wouldn't go amiss. Got all that covered? Here are our best other small bedroom ideas. You're welcome!

If you've got a small bedroom, we bet there isn't loads of space for a walk-in wardrobe or a huge dresser, so you're probably cramming all your clothes into one closet or clothes horse, or worse, piling it all up on 'the chair'. These cool hangers will help you fit in all your stuff – you could even use each for a different outfit, to make choosing what to wear super easy.

Puimentiua Trouser organisers, set of 2

Last wardrobe organiser and this one's for your jeans. Instead of taking up precious rail space for trousers, store them in the bottom of your wardrobe, or even in a cupboard, with these ingenious organisers. Why didn't we think of this before?

These are so clever! Instead of stacking shoes next to each other, these babies make it so you can pop one on top of the other instead. So, where you may have been able to fit five pairs of shoes in your space before, these will mean you can now squeeze in 10 – nice.

If you don't have drawers beneath the hanging rails in your wardrobe, then you'll likely have some dead space at the bottom that could be used for the rest of your stuff. These drawers will slot in and keep your t-shirts and shirts neat, or there are deeper versions for jumpers and bulkier items too.

If you just can't fit anything else in your wardrobe, even with a bunch of special hangers, then you might have to get a bit savvier about what you store where. Now the summer's on the way in, take out your chunky knitwear pieces and store them in under-bed boxes instead. These ones have wheels, so you can easily pull them out if you do need something after all.

Look, we get it: you can never have too many clothes. If you've taken your off-season stuff out of your wardrobe but there's still too much stuff to fit in boxes under the bed, then vacuum packing it will SERIOUSLY reduce the volume. I used these when I was packing to go travelling, and I was shocked by how much more I could fit in my case.

While we're on the subject of clothes storage, for really small bedrooms, big bulky furniture pieces aren't going to do much to help make the space feel airier. Ditch your wardrobe completely and switch it for a clothes rack. This one has two rails, plus some shorter ones at the sides for your accessories, so there's still plenty of room for all your outfits.

When you're working with a teeny space, one of the first things to go is the cute little accessories that make a room feel homely. This is really sad, you know? Especially in a bedroom which should be your personal little sanctuary, you need decorative trinkets. Using a radiator shelf can turn this dead space into a place for your little plants, candles and such, so you can put it to #work.

I use one of these to store my spare blankets in at the end of my bed and it seriously doesn't look like it costs just £10. The top is padded so you can use it as a seat to sit on to put your shoes on and it's surprisingly roomy inside. It's not bulky, but it does fold down, so it'll slot under the bed if you do need the space back.

If you do have space, consider using a ladder shelf instead of a regular table. This will give you room for your lamp and book, but also has extra space above for decorative bits, a plant or even somewhere to keep more clothes, plus can go right up against the wall to give the illusion of more space.

This mirror slots over a door, so it's handy if you don't have much wall space or just if you're renting and don't want to drill holes. We'd recommend putting it on your wardrobe, if that works, and leaving your bedroom door free for an over-the-door hook organiser for coats and bags.
